Meet the protagonist, 'Bunny' O'Hare. Before an 'attitude problem' landed her a 40-day detention and suspended discharge from the Royal Australian Air Force, Bunny had honed her skills flying F-35s. However, her exceptional performance as a combat pilot, executing missions in tandem with drones, caught the attention of DARPA recruiters. They headhunted her into their dedicated next-generation attack drone program, which had delivered a new weapons platform to specification but now required a new breed of pilot to fly it.
Unlike traditional pilots, DARPA was seeking individuals whose flying and social skills were less important than a talent for continuous partial attention and an ability to contribute to AI coding and development. For Bunny, this was a fortuitous opportunity, as her attention deficit disorder, which had previously been a liability, was now an asset.
From the novel, we learn: "O'Hare cut her teeth on F-35s in the Royal Australian Air Force before an 'attitude problem' earned her a 40 day detention and suspended discharge. But she'd acquitted herself so well as a combat pilot flying missions in tandem with drones that she came to the attention of recruiters at DARPA and was headhunted into their dedicated next-generation attack drone program, which had delivered a new weapons platform to specification, but now needed a new breed of pilot to fly it. DARPA was looking for pilots whose flying and social skills were less important than a talent for continuous partial attention and an ability to contribute to AI coding and development. For the first time in her life, Bunny's attention deficit disorder was actually an asset."
